The NNPC (Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation) quiz competition was inaugurated in 2000 and limited to the Niger Delta level, but went national in 2001 Till date, it has run 15 national editions. The 2017 edition is, therefore, the 16 (excluding a year it was not held).

Background
The NNPC quiz competition is designed mainly for students in the nations secondary schools, the competition has impacted positively on the intellectual attainment of young Nigerians. It has provided financial succour to successful contestants who have been placed on bursary throughout their university education. Many of the awardees had moved on to achieve academic laurels in tertiary institutions, locally and internationally.
Fulfilling aspects of its slant, records show many of the past awardees ended up studying Science and Technology related courses in the university. In 2010, a past winner of the competition emerged second in a contest involving others from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Member Countries, and Austria to commemorate the 50 Anniversary of OPEC.
Several years after its inauguration, the horizon of the competition soars.

- To break down long-held stereotypes and engendering a better sense of National being in participating students, through the cross-cultural interactions that the contest offers.
- To provide a platform for enlightening the students and the general public on the activities of NNPC.

4 - stage competition from Preliminary to National Finals:
- Grassroots level - 774 Local Government Areas of the country.
- State level - 36 States plus the Federal Capital Territory.
- Zonal level - 6 Ceo-political Zones.
- National level - Grand Finale at NNPG Corporate HQ, Abuja.
- Questions would be set by recognized and reputable national/regional examination body
- Subject experts will be present to resolve any contentious answer.
- Answers and results will be publicly and progressively recorded from beginning to the end of each stage of the competition.
- Electronic score boards are to be deployed.
